EXPO KBR pulls out all the stops with an exhibition of the famous Belgian painter James Ensor during the Nocturnes. Dive into the imaginary world of James Ensor, one of Belgium’s greatest artists, and discover how Brussels shaped his quirky and distinctive visual language. Admire Ensor’s paintings and graphic work in the same place where he was often to be found during his Brussels years: the Palace of Charles of Lorraine.

CAUTION: The maximum number of visitors to the exhibition is 100 people per hour. You may have to wait before being allowed inside.

GUIDED TOUR Look beyond Ensor’s mask and discover how his visual language originated in bustling Brussels at the end of the 19th century. A guide shows you around and tells you everything about Ensor’s study drawings at the art academy, his first masterpieces and the salons of the artists’ group ‘Les XX’.

WORKSHOP During this workshop, you will learn to make a drypoint just like James Ensor did. By means of an etching needle, you will scratch a drawing into a beverage carton. Get ready to make your hands dirty for the inking. The engraving will then be put under the printing press which will result in a new masterpiece!
